Troubleshooting the Maxwatt MX15000DSE Generator
Maxwatt MX15000DSE — Support & Troubleshooting
15kVA / 12,000W air-cooled electric start diesel generator. Most common faults can be resolved in a few minutes using the steps below — please work through this guide before contacting us or booking a service.
⚠ Read this before you start
- Running a combustion engine in a confined area can kill in minutes. Exhaust fumes contain carbon monoxide — a deadly gas you cannot see or smell. Never run the generator indoors or in an enclosed space, even with doors and windows open. Operate outdoors only, away from doors, windows and vents.
- Fuel is highly flammable. Keep the generator clear of naked flames and other ignition sources when refuelling or servicing.
- The generator may not be supplied with engine oil. The correct type and amount of engine oil must be added before first use. If your Maxwatt generator was supplied by OFFGRID NOW, this will have been completed prior to installation. Running the engine without oil will void your warranty.
- Do not run the engine during inspection or maintenance unless a step specifically requires it, and let the engine cool enough to touch first.
- Know your limits. Do not attempt any procedure you aren't comfortable with or don't have the correct tools, experience or knowledge for. Take the unit to an authorised service centre or qualified technician instead.

Troubleshooting
The engine is difficult to start
| Possible fault | What to do |
|---|---|
| Lack of fuel | Check there is fuel in the tank and that the fuel tap is in the ON position. Confirm fuel is actually reaching the engine. |
| Engine switch is off | Ensure the engine ON/OFF switch is in the ON position. |
| Not enough engine oil | Check the oil level and make sure it sits at or just below the MAX indicator. After topping up, rock the generator gently side to side to distribute the oil, then re-check. |
| Flat or low battery | Charge or replace the battery. A weak battery is the most common cause of slow or failed cranking on electric start models. |
| Air in the fuel system | If the unit has been run dry or the fuel filter has been changed, the fuel system may need bleeding before it will start. |
The electric start isn't working
| Possible fault | What to do |
|---|---|
| Battery fuse blown | Check the fuse and replace it if required. |
| Battery discharged or terminals loose | Charge the battery and check the terminals are clean and firmly connected. |
The engine starts but won't idle
| Possible fault | What to do |
|---|---|
| Blocked air filter | Perform an air filter service — clean or replace the element. |
| Idle speed needs adjustment | Adjust the idle speed until the engine runs smoothly at a reasonable idle. Note that on direct injection engines, idle adjustment shouldn't normally be required — if it is, have the unit inspected. |
The engine is hard to restart after use, or stops suddenly while running
| Possible fault | What to do |
|---|---|
| No fuel, or low engine oil | Check both levels. The low oil sensor will automatically shut the engine down — or prevent it starting — if the oil level is too low. |
| Overheating | Let the engine cool completely before restarting. Improve cooling where possible: operate in shade, in cooler conditions, and make sure airflow around the unit isn't obstructed. |
| Blocked fuel system | Clean the fuel system and check the fuel filter. |
Engine speed or power drops during use
| Possible fault | What to do |
|---|---|
| Blocked air filter | Perform an air filter service. |
| Carbon build-up in the engine and/or exhaust silencer | Remove the cylinder head and clean carbon from the combustion chamber. Remove the exhaust silencer and clean carbon deposits from the exhaust port. This is a workshop job — book a service if you're not equipped for it. |
| Blocked fuel system | Clean the fuel system. |
The generator runs, but connected equipment isn't getting power
| Possible fault | What to do |
|---|---|
| Generator overloaded | Check whether the overload indicator is lit (red). Stop the generator and disconnect every device. Restart it and confirm the overload indicator is off and the power indicator is green. Reconnect one device and check it powers correctly. If the fault persists, contact an authorised service centre. |
| Circuit breaker or RCD tripped | Reset the breaker/RCD after removing the load. Repeated tripping points to a faulty appliance or an overloaded circuit. |
AC output is fine, but there's no DC output
| Possible fault | What to do |
|---|---|
| DC over-current protection switch tripped | Reset the DC over-current protection switch. |
Servicing and maintenance
Keep a written record of every service: the date, the machine's running hours, and the work performed. Accurate records help the generator last longer, make fault diagnosis faster, and can simplify a warranty claim.
- Check engine oil and fuel levels before every use.
- Inspect the unit for loose, broken, damaged or missing parts, wear, or leaks before every use. Never run a generator in that condition.
- Service the generator once it has run for more than 50 hours.
- Always use genuine Maxwatt spare parts — non-genuine parts will void your warranty.
Checklist: before sending the generator in for assessment or repair
Working through this list first can save you a trip. Many units sent in for repair are found to have one of these issues.
- ✔ The battery is charged.
- ✔ The oil is at the correct level and doesn't need replacing.
- ✔ There is sufficient fuel in the tank.
- ✔ The generator has been serviced if it has run for more than 50 hours.
- ✔ You've checked the owner's/operator's manual for guidance on the fault.
- ✔ You have a copy of your proof of purchase.
