Cheaper Home Batteries Program 2025 – Key Information for Off-Grid and Grid-Connected Power Systems

OFFGRID NOW® Power Cabinets are eligible for the 2025 Cheaper Home Batteries Program Rebate.

The Australian Government’s Cheaper Home Batteries Program is set to roll out from 1 July 2025, offering generous rebates to support households, small businesses, and community organisations in adopting battery storage technology. This initiative is part of the broader push to reduce energy bills and strengthen Australia’s renewable energy future.

OFFGRID NOW® want to ensure you’re across the latest details—especially if you’re running or planning to install an off-grid solar system.

About the Rebate Program

  • Rebate Amount: Up to $372 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) of usable battery capacity (around $330 per kWh after admin costs).

  • Rebate Duration: Launches 1 July 2025 and phases out by 2030, with decreasing support each year.

  • Delivery Mechanism: Administered via the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES)—the same scheme that has driven solar uptake since 2011.

Eligibility Criteria

To qualify for the battery rebate under the Cheaper Home Batteries Program, you must:

  • Install a battery system between 5 kWh and 50 kWh of usable capacity.

    • All OFFGRID NOW® Power Cabinets meet these criteria as our battery modules are 5.12kWh each and dependent on the system can house 1 to 12 battery modules.

  • Use a Clean Energy Council (CEC)-approved battery product and a CEC-accredited installer.

    • OFFGRID NOW® uses Deye inverters and Solarbatt pre-assembled battery systems which are on the Clean Energy Council (CEC) approved product list. All power cabinets are installed by CEC-accredited installers.

  • Connect the battery to a new or existing rooftop solar PV system.

    • OFFGRID NOW® can supply power cabinets for new and existing solar PV systems.

  • Ensure the battery is Virtual Power Plant (VPP)-capable. (Participation in a VPP is optional.)

    • OFFGRID NOW® Deye inverters are VPP-capable.

  • Claim only one rebate per property, though multiple properties may qualify separately.

    • It’s important to note that the rebate can only be applied once per battery system for the batteries included in that claim. Any additional batteries installed after this initial claim are ineligible for a rebate.

🔌 Off-grid systems are eligible if they meet these requirements and if they meet the criteria for being “off-grid”, currently defined as being at least one kilometre from a main grid line or where the cost to connect exceeds $30,000. It is unclear at this time how this will be assessed or proven, and we expect to receive clarification of this criteria soon.

Early Installations (Before July 2025)

Battery systems installed between 6 April and 30 June 2025 may still be eligible if they are not commissioned (i.e. switched on) until after 1 July. Discuss timing carefully with your installer to ensure you meet this requirement.

Can I Combine With Other Rebates?

Yes! The federal rebate can be stacked with existing state or territory rebates (where available). This opens the door to even greater savings for those eligible under local programs.

Next Steps

If you're planning to install a battery system—either on-grid or off-grid—here’s what to do next:

  1. Contact OFFGRID NOW® for expert advice to assess your energy needs and determine the right battery size for your home or property.

  2. Get A Quote for an OFFGRID NOW® power cabinet installed by a CEC approved installer.

  3. Time your installation to align with rebate conditions.

  4. Check for additional rebates at the state level.

  5. Stay updated on final guidelines via the government’s energy programs portal.
