MAXIMISE YOUR BATTERY REBATE

The Australian Federal Governments “Cheaper Home Battery Program” is launching on the 1st July 2025, making it more affordable than ever to install batteries with your home solar system.

Here’s how to maximise your battery rebate.

The Australian Federal Government's Cheaper Home Batteries Program, launching on July 1, 2025, is a $2.3 billion initiative designed to make solar battery storage more accessible and affordable for households, small businesses, and community organizations. By offering substantial rebates, the program aims to accelerate the adoption of battery systems, enhance energy independence, and support the nation's transition to renewable energy.

Rebate Details

Under this program, eligible participants can receive a rebate of up to $372 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) of usable battery capacity. This translates to approximately a 30% discount on the cost of purchasing and installing a battery system. For instance, a 10 kWh battery system could attract a rebate of up to $3,720, significantly reducing the upfront investment required.

The rebate is administered through the existing Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) by the Clean Energy Regulator. It is delivered as an upfront discount via Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs), which are typically handled by accredited installers. It's important to note that the rebate value will decrease by about 10% annually until the program concludes in 2030, encouraging early adoption.

By reducing the financial barriers to battery storage adoption, the Cheaper Home Batteries Program aims to empower Australians to take control of their energy usage, reduce electricity bills, and contribute to a more sustainable energy future.

Eligibility Criteria

The battery system must have a nominal capacity between 5 kWh and 100 kWh. However, the rebate applies only to the first 50 kWh of usable capacity.

BATTERY CAPACITY

Installation must be carried out by professionals accredited by Solar Accreditation Australia (SAA) or the CEC, adhering to all relevant electrical safety regulations.

INSTALLER ACCREDITATION

The battery must be installed in conjunction with a new or existing rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) system. Standalone battery installations without solar PV are not eligible.

SYSTEM INTEGRATION

For grid-connected systems, the battery must be capable of participating in a VPP, allowing for coordinated energy distribution. Participation in a VPP is optional, but the capability is mandatory.

VIRTUAL POWER PLANT CAPABILITY

Both the battery and its inverter must be listed on the Clean Energy Council's (CEC) approved product list, ensuring they meet Australian safety and performance standards.

PRODUCT APPROVAL

The rebate is available per property. Owners of multiple properties can claim the rebate for each eligible property, provided each has its own solar PV system.
